Hero skills and progression
How to level expedition skills, use the Drill Camp, run Arena daily, and build toward the right 3-hero lineup for rallies and joining.
Every march takes exactly 3 heroes. That cap shapes every skill investment decision — what you level, in which order, and whether you’re building for leading or joining. This guide covers the mechanics behind skill leveling, the Drill Camp that removes the hero XP grind, and the Arena as a daily driver for gems and upgrade materials.
TL;DR
- Joiner priority: first expedition skill on Hero 1 to Level 5 first — it’s the only skill that contributes when joining a rally
- Drill Camp (TC13) is mandatory — it levels your support heroes for free; never grind Hero XP manually
- Run Arena 5 times daily — one of your top 3 gem sources; skip it and you’re permanently behind on Roulette spending
- Spend Arena tokens on hero shards first, then Custom Mythic Hero Gear Chests
- Never spread Expedition Manuals across many heroes — concentrate on 2–3 core heroes
- Heroes 2 and 3 in your joiner lineup contribute troops and capacity only, no skills — send your strongest troop heroes there
Skill leveling priority
Your joiner Hero 1’s first expedition skill is the only one that can contribute to a rally’s joiner skill pool. The rally takes the 4 highest-level first skills from all joiners. Second and third skills are never used when joining.
For joiner heroes: level first skill to 5 before touching anything else.
For rally leaders, all three heroes’ full skill sets apply — level all skills, but still prioritize the first skill on each hero before pushing second and third.
Hero lineup for joining
Slot your heroes strategically:
- Hero 1 — your best combat joiner with a leveled first skill (Chenko, Howard, Marlin, etc.)
- Heroes 2 and 3 — your highest troop capacity heroes; their skills are ignored, only their deployment capacity counts
Sending the wrong hero in slot 1 (a gatherer, a construction hero) wastes the joiner skill slot entirely. Sending the wrong heroes in slots 2–3 reduces the troop count you contribute to the rally.
TL;DR
- Level all skills in parallel across your 3 heroes — every expedition skill applies when you lead, so spreading levels evenly is more resource-efficient than maxing one hero before touching the others
- Widget skills are multiplicative — highest priority on any Mythic hero
- Drill Camp (TC13) is still essential — it handles your depth roster so Manuals go to your core 3
- Run Arena 5 times daily — tokens convert to hero shards and Custom Mythic Hero Gear Chests, both high value
Skill leveling priority
As a rally leader, all 3 heroes’ full expedition skill sets apply to every troop in the rally. Since every skill is actively used, the most efficient approach is to level all skills in parallel — bring all skills across your 3 heroes up together rather than maxing one hero before moving to the next. This keeps your total power output higher at each manual expenditure point.
Widget bonuses are multiplicative — they compound on top of research, gear, and other hero skills. Treat Widget skill investment as equal priority to standard expedition skills.
Expedition vs Conquest skills
These are completely separate systems. Expedition skills are used in all combat marches — rallies, terrors, bear hunts, PvP. Conquest skills are used exclusively in the Conquest mini-game mode. Expedition Skill Manuals and Conquest Skill Tomes are different materials and don’t substitute for each other.
When guides say “level your hero skills,” they mean Expedition skills.
Drill Camp
Unlocks at Town Center 13. Designate up to 5 heroes as Drill Instructors. Every other hero you slot into Drill positions automatically levels up to match the lowest Drill Instructor’s level — at zero Hero XP cost.
This removes the Hero XP grind for your depth roster entirely. Your Expedition Manuals and shards go to your 3 core heroes; Drill Camp handles everyone else passively.
Resetting instructors: use the Level Resets tab to remove a Drill Instructor and reclaim all spent Hero XP. Full flexibility to pivot your lineup as new generations drop or your roster changes.
Unlocking Drill Camp at TC13 should be a progression milestone — the free leveling it provides accelerates your entire hero roster without competing with your primary resource budget.
Arena
The Arena is a daily 1v1 PvP ladder. You get 5 free attempts per day. Run all 5 every day without fail — it’s one of your top three daily gem sources, and gems feed directly into Hero Roulette pulls.
Additional rewards:
- Arena Tokens from victories, accumulate toward the token shop
- Win streak bonuses at 3, 5, and 10 consecutive wins
- Season-end gems based on your highest tier achieved
Arena token shop priority (F2P):
- Hero Shards — only for heroes you’re actively building
- Custom Mythic Hero Gear Chests — strong secondary value
- Speed-ups — solid fallback
- Skip raw resources — poor token efficiency
Arena token shop priority (Spender):
- Custom Mythic Hero Gear Chests — first priority until all 3 of your main heroes have full Mythic gear; this is a must for rally leaders, as Mythic gear provides multiplicative combat bonuses that directly amplify rally power
- Hero Shards — once all 3 heroes are fully geared
- Speed-ups — after the above are covered
- Skip raw resources — poor token efficiency
Arena takes roughly 5 minutes daily. Missing it is a permanent gem and token loss with no way to recover the missed attempts.
Skill material sources
Expedition Skill Manuals (used to level Expedition skills):
- Terror rallies
- Daily Missions
- Hero Recruitment Chests
- VIP daily rewards
- Conquest events
Conquest Skill Tomes (used to level Conquest skills — separate from above):
- Beast hunts
- Terror rallies
- Daily Missions
- Coliseum (available Monday–Tuesday only)
- Conquest events
Manuals are the limiting resource for most players. Concentrate them on 2–3 heroes — spreading them thin produces nothing.
